FAQs

What is SEEDS?
SEEDS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was created as the Deaf Ministry at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church grew, and as generous donors recognized the need for dedicated endowments to support the Deaf community. SEEDS provides scholarships and other funding to meet the specific needs of the Deaf, ensuring that this important ministry continues to flourish and respond to those it serves.
What is SEEDS’ Goal?
SEEDS seeks to help educate Deaf and hard of hearing young adults to become Christian leaders, particularly in the United Methodist Church, for d/Deaf communities near and far.
Who is eligible for this scholarship?
The scholarship is open to any Deaf or hard-of-hearing student of any age who has completed high school or earned a GED, meets the religious criteria, and is currently involved in their local church. Eligible applicants must intend to attend an accredited or private college or university or pursue certification in a specific trade.
Is SEEDS funding available as my sole source of support?
No. Each applicant must apply for government funding (Pell Grant, other scholarships, and Vocational Rehabilitation in their state). The SEEDS scholarship would cover expenses that are left unpaid or not covered by the grant, other scholarships, or VR services.
What expenses does the scholarship cover?
It typically covers college tuition and fees, books, school supplies, and sometimes additional costs like assistive technology, interpreters, or other accommodations. Note: in the state of Texas, Deaf residents are encouraged to apply for the Certification of Deafness for the Tuition Waiver.
How do I apply for the scholarship?
Submit an online application through our website, including transcripts, a personal statement, proof of hearing loss, and recommendation letters.
Is there an application deadline?
Yes, applications are due by May 21, 2025. Check the website for exact deadlines.
Do I need to provide proof of Deafness?
Yes, you’ll need to submit an audiogram or a letter from a medical professional confirming your hearing loss.
Can international students apply?
Yes, any individual can apply for this scholarship. Applicants in Texas are required to apply for the Certificate of Deafness for a Tuition Waiver, plus apply with their state Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. Applicants outside of Texas must go to their Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in their state to determine how much financial assistance they will need from SEEDS.
What is the scholarship amount?
Awards vary per individual need. Applicants should have alternate means of funding.
What are the GPA requirements?
Applicants need a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher on their last transcript but check the specific scholarship guidelines.
Can the scholarship be renewed?
Current students must reapply annually. Scholarships are renewable if you maintain good academic standing (meeting GPA requirements).

How has SEEDS impacted the Deaf community and expanded its outreach?
What began as a small school for young Deaf adults recently out of high school, then to younger Deaf students with additional disabilities and serving about 60 students and their families from 2008 to 2016, SEEDS now provides scholarships for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. As a partner with the Deaf Ministry of Lovers Lane, SEEDS has complemented the Deaf Ministry in international influence, supporting the very first Deaf theology student at Africa University in Old Mutare, Zimbabwe, graduating in 2023. This student is now the first Deaf to serve as a Regional Missionary for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Zimbabwe and beyond for the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Other potential partnerships exists with the Tanzania Annual Conference Yatosha Deaf Ministry.
